What to Look for in a Good Skateboard Shop
With the popularity of skateboarding at an all new high, skateboard shops are popping up everywhere. Anyone who’s ever ridden a skateboard is suddenly qualified to run a shop of their own. Since there’s a skateboard shop around every corner these days, how do you know when you’ve stumbled upon a good one?
Helpful Owners
When you need help with finding a new deck or replacing that old pair of worn out skate shoes, is the staff or owners helpful? Do they know what they’re talking about or is it just some kid with no experience paid $8/hour to work the register? A good skateboard shop has owners that are ready and able to help you find what you need, give advice on new products they’ve tried, or to answer any questions you might have. Most skate shop owners are passionate about skateboarding. If you can’t tell, then you may want to find another shop.
Size and Selection
I’m sure you’ve seen the tiny skateboard shops that have a ton of merchandise crammed into such a small spot that you can’t possibly find what you need. On the other hand, we’ve all been in those warehouse-like stores where there’s no sense of community or friendly owners – just row upon row of product. The best skateboard shop falls somewhere in the middle of these two extremes, where there’s enough space to display all the merchandise, while still maintaining that “shop” feel.
A Good Pit Stop
Let’s not forget that a good skate shop is not just a store to buy parts for your skateboard and the occasional T-shirt, it’s a hangout. It’s a place to take a break, grab a drink, hit the bathroom, and make a phone call. It should be a meeting place and a place to replace your cracked deck. Find a local skateboard shop that provides that sense of community and let’s you make a pit stop every now and then.
